Location: Rand Tract Park (Webster Pond), The Valley in Syracuse
200 Block of Valley Drive
Syracuse, NY

If you are just itching to get outside after this long winter, come join Emily Alexander and Slow Food CNY on the wild edible and medicinal spring plants walk! Spring is probably one of the most plentiful seasons for wild edibles, especially wild greens, so join us at the Rand Tract in the Valley and learn basic identification, traditional uses and lots more about so-called common plants!

You’ll never look at ‘weeds’ the same way again!

This event is free and open to the public.

Remember to wear weather appropriate clothes and shoes for walking as we will be walking to different points around the Rand Tract where the terrain is variable and often sloped. Don’t forget – spring is also mud season! The walk will last about an hour. See below for more details.

Meeting Location: Trailhead in Onondaga Valley Cemetary – Heading south on Valley Drive, take the right into the cemetary, go straight back until you get to a “T” intersection, then take a right and you should see a grassy area/trailhead straight ahead of you.

R.S.V.P.: Please send an email to slowfoodcny@gmail.com or click “Attending” on the Facebook page if you’re planning on attending!

We look forward to seeing everyone!

Compare different CSAs side-by-side to find the one that’s right for you. Erwin United Methodist Church at 920 Euclid Avenue will be host to this family-friendly, educational event on Saturday March 19 from 1-4pm.

This fair is produced with help from Slow Food CNY. Drop in for a 15 minute mini-workshop on <How CSA Works>, <Cooking with the Seasons> , or <Food Storage Tips>. There will be activities for the kids – so bring them along, too!

What is CSA?

What if you could get a season’s worth of produce directly from a local farmer? You can! Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is becoming a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food straight from the farmer who grows it. Here’s how it works: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” of the farm’s bounty for sale at the beginning of the season. Typically, the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included, like eggs or fresh bread. Consumers purchase a membership and in return receive a weekly share of produce each week throughout the farming season. You get the freshest produce, picked at the peak of ripeness – not shipped from across the country or stored for weeks.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a unique economic relationship because it is a partnership between consumers and farmers. Consumers contract with farmers before the growing season begins, and agree to share the risks and rewards of growing food in their local climate. Farmers are free to practice the art of sustainable farming because they are guaranteed a market and an income; consumers receive fresh, just-picked local produce and the satisfaction of helping to keep local farms in business. Each CSA, like every farm, is different and this fair will allow you to find the best fit for your household.

Sound interesting? You can learn more about CSA, meet farmers, compare CSAs side-by-side, and sign up for the 2011 season at the Syracuse Region Community Supported Agriculture Fair!

This event is sponsored by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) through a Specialty Crop Block Grant from NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. NOFA-NY is a statewide non-profit organization of farmers, gardeners, consumers, and businesses established in 1983 to create a sustainable regional food system which is ecologically sound and economically viable. NOFA-NY brings consumers and farmers closer together to make high quality organic food available to all people.
Menu: (this is taken from The Copper Oven website)
Meaty Pie – We start this wood fired pizza with a base of homemade tomato sauce (yep, the tomatoes are straight from the garden), then layer it with slices of pepperoni from Autumn’s Harvest Farm in Romulus New York. Then we add diced peppers (also locally sourced) and top it off with a three cheese blend of NY cheddar, mozzarella and provolone.

Autumn Harvest Pie – We start this wood fired pizza with a base of locally sourced caramelized onions and chevre from Lively Run. Then we add to that dollops of an apple cider seasoned butternut and acorn squash puree (seriously, it’s good). And when we’re done firing it, we finish this pizza with sweet drizzles of homemade cider reduction (from Kingtown Orchards cider in Trumansburg, NY).

Additional savory treats and/or desserts (if MJ has the time to prepare them), and wine by the glass, may be purchased a la carte.

Directions: Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery and The Copper Oven are located at 6800 State Route 89, Ovid, NY 14521, which is on the west side of Cayuga Lake.

This will be a lot of fun. Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery make some excellent, award wining wines, and the pizzas MJ and Seth prepare using local ingredients are absolutely superb. Come join us for a celebration of the end of a wonderful growing season and harvest.
