The Price is Right- September Membership Special!
Being part of your local Slow Food CNY movement is priceless, but we understand not everyone who wants to be involved has the fundage for signing up as a member, which is why September is the perfect month for anyone and everyone to join! Whether it’s a buck or a Benjamin- we want you as a member of this organization that promotes good, clean, fair food for all. Membership fees help us pay for community events, workshops, and potlucks throughout the year.

University Community Harvest Farmers’ Market:
September 9th 11:00am- 3:00pm
The University Community Harvest Farmers’ Market is presented by Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry and is open to the public. The market made its debut during the summer of 2007 and will be held on four Fridays during the Central New York growing season. University faculty and staff members are encouraged to attend. The event is held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Waverly Ave parking lot and free parking is available in the University Avenue Garage. Community members working or living in downtown Syracuse are encouraged to travel to the farmers’ market via the free Connective Corridor Shuttle Bus.
Approximately 30 Central New York farms and organizations participate in the markets, featuring a wide variety of locally grown fruits, vegetable, plants, snacks, condiment and crafts.
Building Raised Garden Beds: Free Workshop led by Les Ulm: Sept. 14th: 5:30-7:30pm
Southwest Community Farm : 100 Bellevue Avenue, Syracuse NY 13204
Les will teach us how to build raised beds with lumber, then answer questions on building raised beds in your own garden space. We will also discuss Garden Soxx, another innovative gardening solution for raised bed gardening. Garden Soxx are used in several of our Syracuse Grows community gardens.

Feeling Challenged? Learn what else is local and prepare a light local meal with Natrural Gourmet Chef Abigail Henson while she shares recipes, sources, and tips for eating local during September’s Locavore Challenge Month! The $5 Challenge is up and running. We’ve heard great ideas for events, including potlucks, $5 farmers market specials and pooling money to cook up a big farmers market meal. It’s easy to host a meal, and if you’re planning to eat dinner that day, chances are you might be taking the challenge already! Local Food Cooking Demo and Tasting at Marcellus Free Library: September 22nd 7PM
Fall is one of the most abundant times for local bounty and showcasing it on our plates. Join Chef Abigail of Slow Food CNY to learn about the different ways to live local and celebrate the gifts the autumn harvest offers us. You will learn creative new ways to enjoy root vegetables, gourds, grains, and cruciferous, all of fall’s superstars so that you can look like a superstar in the kitchen! Free to the public. They don’t call it a challenge for nothin’ - sometimes even though we are surrounded by local bounty- we just forget how much there really is to eat. Join us for this local-centric feast of an occasion. Locavore Challengers across NY state will be celebrating together each bringing a dish to pass made from locally sourced ingredients. Location TBA
Wild EdiblesWalk with Emily Alexander:

Join our local wild edibles specialist as she enlightens us- things that look like branches, leaves, and even weeds can -with the proper identification and collection methods -offer an interesting twist at the dinner table. Learn what some of these things are and you’ll be surprised to learn they are mostly growing in your own backyard. Location TBA
